SCHSA Headquarters wins Japan’s Good Design Award 2018

In its sixth year of operation, Senior Citizen Home Safety Association (SCHSA) and Clifton Design Workshop joyfully announced that the interior design of its Oi Man headquarters, the base of SCHSA’s  24/7 assistance and support service, has been awarded the Good Design Award 2018 of Japan.

As a long time partner of SCHSA, Clifton Design Workshop was in charge of the interior design of SCHSA’s Oi Man headquarters. They transformed the 3-storey, 43,000 sq. ft. area into a cozy and functional hub for a variety of activities for senior citizens. On the second and third floor of Oi Man Centre, distinctive elements from an earlier period of Hong Kong’s history are reused in a modern setting, paying tribute to SCHSA Vision to empower the elderly to “Be Safe, Be Well” living in the community.

Maura Wong, Chief Executive Officer of SCHSA, said: “The edgy yet vintage-themed our headquarters really showcases the beauty in the old, which is a core belief of SCHSA. The design let our headquarter blend harmoniously with the neighborhood of Oi Man Estate, one of the oldest public housing estates in Hong Kong. We could not thank Clifton Design Workshop enough for the brilliant design, enabling SCHSA to be an ideal hub for a wide spectrum of services and activities for the senior citizens in the community.”

The judging panel of Good Design Award 2018 praised the interior design of SCHSA’s Oi Man Centre for celebrating the value and contributions of senior citizens through a reuse of upcycling distinctive vintage elements from old Hong Kong with a modern twist. The inviting space enables staff, volunteers and visitors, to be active and mingle, an echo to SCHSA’s values to be people-centric through leveraging technology.

Clifton Leung, the Founder and Chief Design Officer of Clifton Design Workshop, said: “I am grateful that whenever I visit Oi Man Centre, I can feel the warm interactions between staff and volunteers of SCHSA. The Old Hong Kong setting of the Centre also helps the elderly recall the memories of the good old days in Hong Kong and their younger selves. I would like to thank SCHSA for giving me great freedom to create an ideal place where heartwarming stories built on the city’s rich culture and heritage could be shared.”

Originated in Japan, the Good Design Award is widely acclaimed as the “The oriental Oscar Award of Design”.  Established in 1957, the Good Design Award aims at enriching people’s lives and society through design. Through the Award, it aims to illuminate the possibilities of design, which ultimately lead to the creation of the society where everyone can lead a rich and creative life.

The judging panel of Good Design Award 2018 complimented that the interior design of Oi Man Centre celebrates the value and contributions of the elders by reusing and applying distinct Old Hong Kong elements in a modern form.
